Alysa Liu’s Triumph Marks U.S. Women’s Figure Skating Milestone

Alysa Liu's remarkable return to competitive figure skating culminated in a historic victory at the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships in Boston, marking the United States' first women's singles world title in nearly two decades. At just 19 years old, Liu's performance not only showcased her technical prowess but also her resilience and determination.

After a two-year hiatus, Liu made a stunning comeback, leading the competition with a personal best score of 74.58 points in the short program. This achievement placed her ahead of Japan's Mone Chiba, who trailed by 1.14 points, and fellow American Isabeau Levito, who secured third place with a score of 73.33.

In the free skate segment, Liu delivered a flawless routine, solidifying her lead and clinching the gold medal. Her victory ended a 19-year drought for American women in the world championships, with the last title secured by Kimmie Meissner in 2006.

Liu's journey to this triumph was marked by significant challenges. After becoming the youngest U.S. champion at 13 in 2019, she took a step back from the sport in 2022 to focus on her education and personal growth. Her decision to return was driven by a renewed passion for skating and a desire to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a world champion.

The 2025 World Championships in Boston were also a platform for honoring the victims of the tragic Flight 5342 accident earlier in the year. A special tribute was held to remember the skaters, coaches, and families lost in the collision, underscoring the tight-knit nature of the skating community and its resilience in the face of adversity.

Looking ahead, Liu's victory positions her as a strong contender for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Her performance not only elevates her status in the sport but also brings renewed attention to American figure skating, inspiring a new generation of skaters to pursue excellence on the international stage.
